 Post subject: substr in the HQL query

hi,
i am using hibernate version 2.0 and whenver i run the following HQL query i get an error undefined alias: substr.

the query is:- select distinct substr(number, 1, 1) from Employee.

has anybody used substr in the query?

what is the resolution for this error?
