Post subject: should the src provided with hibernate distros compile?

Hibernate version: 3.1.3, 3.2.2

We are having an extremely strange problem within our code, which made me try to include the hibernate src and compile it as part of my project instead of using the hibernate jar, and i get errors about unresolved symbols for org.hibernate.hql.ast.HqlSqlBaseWalker and some other related classes.
i'm just curious if the src is guaranteed to compile, or is it more for just reference for some of the classes?
Thanks,
Nilesh
