My web site is hosted on LunarPages.com. I was thinking of adding tomcat container support and was browsing their instructions for how to accomplish this and stumbled across a "restrictions" page (http://helpdesk.lunarpages.com/faq.php? ... icleid=120), which under the title of "The following libraries are NOT allowed on our servers:" says:

Hibernate: Consumes excessive amounts of server resources.

Has anyone seen restrictions/statements like this elsewhere?

I followed up with support at LunarPages.com to understand what measurements they had made and had this correspondence:

I apologize for the delay in replying to your question. Unfortunately, I cannot provide you with details of what part of hibernate that causes the excessive cpu / memory usuage.

When we originally setup our guidelines it was tested in a test enviroment. Since then we have found that customers using this will use an excessive amount of memory, to the point where it causes the server to become unstable and results in a reboot of the server.

To which I replied:

When did these tests happen? What O.S. do your servers run? I suspect that if Hibernate had memory usage issues, they have been fixed.

We have not experienced any unusual memory usage with Hibernate. We are using the latest release. We upgraded last month. We've been using hibernate for about a year.

And this is the final response:

The tests were done on redhat os. Unfortunately, we still notice this trend with new customers using hibernate. I cannot confirm what version they are using, it's possible they are using older versions.

One thing I do find odd about his response is that they have new customers using Hibernate in spite of the fact it is forbidden.

Probably it is not a hibernate fault, but "best practices" used by applications like "long session"

All BS. Hibernate consumes as much memory as you let it consume. The fact that there is no built-in "limit" means that guys like the testers of a hoster very likely got an OOME when they tried to test for a limit.
