Hi,

I am trying to investigate an error which is getting thrown on the production servers of our clients. We don't get the same error in our dev environment. I am not allowed to use the production environment (obviously) to do any 'testing' so I am having a hard time trying to reproduce the same error.

I have done some investigation and these are my findings:

The error is due the use of
<prop key="hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto">update</prop>

I understand that this property should not be used in production and is only meant to be used in the dev environment, but somehow it got missed and went to production this way. Now before we change it back from "update" to "validate" or nothing, I am required to give them a detailed reply as to what is causing this error before I get to change it in the next release.

The following line in org.hibernate.tool.hbm2ddl.ColumnMetadata.java seems to be the cause:
Line 26: typeName = new StringTokenizer( rs.getString("TYPE_NAME"), "() " ).nextToken();

rs.getString("TYPE_NAME") is probably returning a NULL. The database that is in use on production is MS SQL Server 2005.

I checked the MSDN documentation and it says querying for TYPE_NAME can return a null if the user doing the query doesn't have enough rights. That definitely isn't the case. Other situation mentioned there is that if the id isn't mentioned, then it might return a null. However I've tested this same call on my local system in the same way the hibernate classes leading to this line do and it seems to be working without specifying any id as an arguement to TYPE_NAME. (I am using MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition)

Can anybody tell me when a rs.getString("TYPE_NAME") could return a null? Or if it looks like something other than what I think is the problem, please let me know.
