Why is it that HQL doesn't generated is null for me?

If I'm building a HQL query myself why is it that I have to conditionally use "is null only" if the identifier I'm evaluating is null or not?

When is it ever desirable to have attribute = null in a query? ie. why is that the default behaviour?
