Hibernate version: Hibernate 2.1.6 and JBoss 3.2.5

I was wondering if Hibernate supports the "support" transaction type in declarative transactions in EJB? I investigated this a couple of years ago and at the time the second level cache required that a transaction be open.

Is this still the case? I'd like to change all my reads to supports type if possible.

Thats actually only the case if you are using the "transactional" cache concurrency strategy (i.e, JBoss TreeCache) AFAIK. For everything else, if you are using the Hibernate transaction API you are fine.
