I'm having trouble understanding exactly how caching is utilized to avoid hitting the db. Do I specifically have to query the cache to see if the object I need is already there? Or is it done automatically when I submit a query ?

Thanks

Everything is done automaticaly - you just have to enable caching (see SessionFactory configuration).
