Hibernate version:
2.1

I am new to hibernate & java & ant.

Have done a search on hibernate forums but unable to find the answer to the most simple question.. where is net.sf.hibernate.tool.hbm2java.Hbn2JavaTask ?

Have downloaded the hibernate extensions all I get are a bunch of java files. Unfortunately I am not competent enough to compile the java file.

All the books refer to Hbn2JavaTask as if it is in the JAR file. Am I missing something here, as I all there is are JAVA files..

please help.

It was a silly mistake on my part. Found it in hibernate-tools.jar.

1/ For Hibernate2 you should download the latest available hibernate-extensions (2.1.3 probably)
Inside there is a hibernate-tools.jar it contains the Ant tasks.

2/ For Hibernate3 you should follow the links from http://www.hibernate.org/255.html. Inside you will find the H3 related Ant tasks. Be aware that the package names were changed.

3/ A cannot see a reason to start using H2 instead of H3.
