Hello

When you perform a query, such as:

List list = session.createQuery("from Item").list();

does it always have to be part of a transaction?

No, it doesn't, when you perform mentioned code only.

You should better wrap everything with explicit transaction handling code unless you know _exactly_ what you are doing. For more information, search the forum for the numerous "are transactions necessary" threads we already had here.
