hi did some topic searching and don't see an answer to my question so I thought I would post it and hope I don't get slammed with "RTFM" or "do a better search"

is there any way to let hibernate.cfg.xml get properties read from "ServletContext Attributes?"

Well, imo no. But you can also build the Configuration object by yourself without using the hibernate.cfg.xml. So, you could call anything you want to build the Configuration object, then create the SessionFactory programmatically.
