Hibernate version:
Hibernate 3

It seems that the dom4j parsers is always going to check the schema. Is it possible to use a local one instead. Technically, i know this is possible, but is there a setting that i can turn on/off in order to change this behavious in Hibernate?

An XML parser should always try first in the Hibernate JAR file, where the DTDs are packaged. You most likely have a broken DTD declaration.

it was the hibernate 2.0 mapping files that were still there.
converting them over fixed the problems.
