Currently, HibernateContext.getSession() must be called in transactional context. If transaction not started yet (default for servlets for example) you'll receive NPE in prepareSession() here:

Code:

         TransactionManager tm = (TransactionManager) context.lookup("java:/TransactionManager");
         tm.getTransaction().registerSynchronization( new TransactionSynch(name, session) );

Makes sence to add a smart error message (exception).
