Has Hibernate been following the SDO effort by BEA and IBM? This looks like a very interesting proposal for handling disconnected communication between a client tier and the persistence layer. I am just wondering if any thought has been given to allow a seemless passthrough from the Hibernate layer out to the client and back.

Yes, if this spec ever sees the light of day - and doesn't turn out to be some complex-overdesigned-by-committee stuff, then we can easily provide native support in Hibernate3. (HB3 was designed with this in mind.)
