We want to write a ERP software with Java.

I belive that J2EE is a complicated beast even if you use a third party application framework which sits on top of it. And I think that project failure is likely with J2EE because of many things.

Our requirements are business applications for the staffers. So they will get a Swing GUI client because it makes them more productive than a thin client. The maximum number of users will be 200. Its very unlikely that there will be more users in the next 5 years.

I have in mind the simplest working solution which would be a simple client-server thing.

But since so many people use J2EE (often for no good reason I think), I am not sure, if I am right.

So I would like to know, what you think about it? Do we need J2EE? Or is there a lean software production possible without J2EE? Please also explain why.

I also would be interested in reading about successful client-server projects WITHOUT J2EE.
