I have a map which has both a primary key generator as well as a unique key structure on 2 columns. In terms of locking when writing a record, does hibernate do this automatically or do i need to explicitly specify LockMode.WRITE for example?

Hibernate uses the isolation mode of your JDBC connection first. Second, you can set exclusive locks with a LockMode.
