First things first, hibernate is a great tool!

Question: Is there any additional documentation on explaining the hilo id generator? I am trying to grasp the significance of the max_lo attribute, didn't see any light shed on it in the reference manual.

basically max_lo is the number of ids the generator creates before hitting the db to increment the max value. There is some stuff on the Net about HiLo generators for example here http://www.theserverside.com//patterns/thread.jsp?thread_id=4228
