Update is required for the question's answer (Advanced FAQs),

How can I provide my <subclass> mappings in a seperate file?

at http://www.hibernate.org/117.html#A19

as the new attribute "extends" in 2.1.1 can be used to place sub class definitions (<subclass> and <joined-subclass>) in seperate file.

I've forwarded it to the dev mailing list.
Thanks
