I noticed the <set role=xxx> syntax in an external document, but this is not mentioned in the reference doc.

Is this deprecated? If not, what does it mean?

The doc you looked at likely refered to old syntax from a previous version of Hibernate. If you are using Hibernate 2.x stick with its documentation.

Its worth looking at the DTD when you have mapping document questions like this one. I know I do :-)
