If I'm currently using core:3.3.1.GA and ejb3-persistence 1.0.2.GA, entitymanager 3.4.0.GA

Should I expect to see values values ala JDBC 2.0 style batching when batch size is enabled?

Also are there any more optimizations that existing beyond this version that signficantly speed up an application inserting lots of data in batches?

This is a very old version. Why don't you migrate to newer versions like 5.2 so that you can benefit from Session-level batching. and many fixes related to ordering batches?
