All - we are working on a POC to convert all our EE Java applications to OSGI. However, I have not been able to find any latest Hibernate version and especially Hibernate 4 as an OSGI bundle.
In my opinion, this is a major disadvantage as all other JPA 2.0 provider (OpenJPA, Eclipselink, DataNucleus) publish their libraries as OSGI bundles.
Until this is available for Hibernate, we actually may have to switch over to OpenJPA or Eclipselink.

Any idea if and when this would be available?

P.S. I know that I could OSGI'fy Hibernate myself following a blog post some time ago. However, I don't want to do that myself and would actually expect RedHat/JBoss to do that for the community.

Hi,
I think you're right we should make sure to publish OSGI bundles, but while I agree we should strongly endorse such an effort, even if this project is sponsored by Red Hat it still is a true open source project: by "the community" we don't mean only consumers but we need help as well, you should not consider the Hibernate team as the coders but rather the guardians of good quality against the chaos: everyone can and should implement the innovation. Of course, we love to code as well.. but I for one have never used OSGI and have no clue on how to do what you ask :-)

So I think it's reasonable that you don't want to do it yourself since maintaining that would be troublesome for your project, and this patch would likely benefit many more users than yourself; if you would like to do it and contribute, I'll be glad to check that it doesn't break anything and apply your changes, so that in future you won't have to mess with the jars and everyone else will benefit from it as well.

Hi Sanne,

excellent reply, you got me there. :)

I guess your suggestion to contribute to the Hibernate project is just fair and I will try to carve out some time in my busy days to work on this. :)

I'll keep you posted and reply to this topic once I have something to show.

-Uli

Hi Uli, thank you that would be great! Really I'm not trying to avoid the work, but if you can try it out in your systems that will make it much better for sure than have me trying it.
Of course if you need any help with the sources or build, just ask we'll help you. Besides this forum, if you need help or advice on coding (as opposing to using) Hibernate you can use the hibernate-dev mailing list or IRC channels:
http://hibernate.org/community/mailinglists
http://hibernate.org/community/irc

Relevant issues:
https://hibernate.onjira.com/browse/HHH-5812
https://hibernate.onjira.com/browse/HHH-3201

Link to hibernate-dev thread about this: http://lists.jboss.org/pipermail/hibern ... 07530.html

Thanks

I think you om with the fact that we should make sure to always publish OSGI bundles, but while I agree we should all agree to endorse the initiative. The consumers are always in need of good things and will be ok for it.
Myself for example have not used the code OSGI for once.

Hi, I'm not sure I understood that. By "endorsing the initiative" are you suggesting you want to help or are you worried it will break other users? Rest assured that we won't allow quality to go backwards or compatibility to be broken with current usage, and we have plenty of tests supporting this goal. Of course there always is a risk in any change, so feel free to follow this on the mailing list as well and verify the patches, that would be helpfull as well.

I have not any sample where I can deploy hibernate version with OSGI in JBoss EAP 6.1 or JBOSS 7.1.1.
Does efforts are deemed, after the conversation or managed somewhere else?
