 Post subject: Using Oracle hints with queries

Hi

we use mostly hibernate in our project, however we found a place where we need to specify an Oracle hint for SQL to use correct index.
What is the most appropriate way of doing this to keep the code portable across different databases?
What is the most common approach in such cases?
