 Post subject: Hibernate Translation features

I am reading an XML and inserting into sybase back end. Some of my xml files have some non ASCII characters (quotes from word which cannot be read in a regular text editor). Is there any configuration that can be set in hibernate properties to let hibernate ignore these special characters before inserting them into the backend.
