I have been searching the net for an hour trying to find the source to the odmg.jar file included in the hibernate 2.0.2 distribution, to no avail. Where is the source for this library? It must be open source, if it's included here, right? I've been asked to track down the source and usage licenses of all dependencies in our products. Ack. Any ideas?

The ODMG is dead. The OJB project includes a copy of the source and I'm sure it's available on some other places around the net.

Thanks a lot. OJB has the source...

Since ODMG is "dead", does that mean there's no licensing for it? It's free to distribute and change however we see fit? (I can't see any reason to change it, since it only defines the ODMG interface, but my company, Cisco Systems, Inc., wants documentation on all usage of Open Source projects for legal reasons.)

I really don't know about the legal status of the ODMG property, and I guess it is difficult to find someone who does. OJB just spit their Apache license all over the (certainly not Apache licensed) ODMG API code and I can only see the notes and e-mail address from the original author from that.

There is a note here http://www.odmg.org/wrayjohnson.htm but its only for a part of ODMG 2. Gavin may have more information about the license. I remember he even has the ODMG book somewhere.

We really should get rid of that dependency in one of the next Hibernate versions. Anyone here using the ODMG API? :)

Gavin once stated that noone really uses the OMDG API; it isn't even documented anywhere, is it? I'm all for removing it altogether in this case, as it represents a quite huge "undocumented feature" that should either get documented or dissolved.

The licensing should be clarified. The capabilities should be documented. The low usage is likely due to the limited exposure it has. There are functionality and marketing advantages of retaining this support. For example, JDO 1.x has a Object Database focus so it maybe wise to retain OMDG for possible future requirements. I do like to see some dependices removed but I am not sure this should be one of them. In conclusion I agree, either kill it or document it.

It has been almost four months since the last post to this thread.

Has the status of ODMG within Hibernate changed?
Has anybody determined the license status of the odmg.jar file distributed with Hibernate?

thanks,

Doug

No, we consider ODMG to be dead.

Any decision on this one? Documentation vs. dissolution?

Maybe put it on JIRA so we don't forget it...
